Abstract

For vertical shaken granular material we investigate the conditions for fluidization in the limits of a 1-d model. Whereas frequently the condition , (: amplitude, : frequency, : gravity) is assumed, we derive a modified criterion which coincides with in the limit of small driving frequency only. Therefore, we conclude that the Froude number is not the proper criterion for the fluidization of a column of spheres and the more it is not suited to characterize a three dimensional granular material. The analytical results are supported by numerical and experimental data.
