Abstract

Assessing the dimensions and correlations of the peripapillary border tissue of the choroid (PBT-C) and peripapillary scleral flange (PBT-S).

The study was done using 85 caucasian eyes, enucleated due to a choroidal melanoma or a secundary angle closure glaucoma, of 85 patients. Lightmicroscopy was used to determine the histomorpometric characteristics of the tissue.

The mean age of the patients included was 62.0 +/- 14.1 years (range:37–87 years) and the mean axial length of 26.7 +/- 3.5 mm (range:21.0–37.0 mm). Shorter axial length was associated with thicker PBT-C (p < 0.001; standardized regression coefficient beta: −0.50), and longer axial length was correlated with longer PBT-C (p < 0.001;beta:0.66). PBT-S correlated with increased thickness with the presence of glaucoma (p = 0.02). The thickness of the optic nerve pia mater increased as well with glaucoma presence (p = 0.046;beta:0.31) but was not statisticall signifcant correlated with axial length (p = 0.34).

Conclusions The perpapillary border of the choroid (PBT-C) and the sclera (PBT-S) are the connecting tissue to the optic nerve pia mater. PBT-C remodells during axial length elongation, e.g. myopia. Considering the importance of the optic nerve head as the exit point of the optic nerve, the peripapillary border tissues may have importatnt biomechanical importance in separating adjacent structures.
